SEPANG: Essential items worth more than RM800,000 have been gathered by various Malaysian non-governmental organisations to provide flood aid for those affected in Pakistan, says Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong.
The Transport Minister said the contributions which were jointly organised and gathered under the Fo Guang Shan Malaysia chapter, Buddha’s Light International Association (BLIA), and Sin Chew Foundation were especially targeted to assist victims in the badly hit district of Swat in Pakistan.
“Impressively, these items were gathered in less than 10 days and comprise 15 tonnes of essentials which were grouped into 1,144 boxes.
“The contributions will be sent to Pakistan today itself on a Pakistan International Airlines flight,” he said at a simple ceremony at the KL International Airport on Thursday (Sept 15).
Dr Wee added that the contribution dubbed “Sending Love & Warmth to Pakistan” displayed a selfless and generous donation which was gathered from people across all walks of life.
“This (contribution) should remind us that as members of a global society, we must be ready to lend a helping hand to ease the pain and suffering of those that need help across our borders.
“We must also be ready to spring into action for those that need our help, regardless of nationality, creed, beliefs or economic backgrounds,” he said.
Also present at the ceremony were Pakistan High Commissioner to Malaysia Amna Baloch, BLIA World South-East Asia Chapter vice-secretary Venerable Chief Abbess Ven Jue Cheng and Sin Chew Foundation deputy chairman Siew Nyoke Chow.
